A cold transfer refers to the process of moving a call directly from one person to another without any conversation between the two agents. The original agent simply routes the call to the destination and disconnects, leaving the customer to speak directly with the new agent.
Cold Transfer routes the caller without any prior agent-to-agent discussion. Warm Transfer involves a brief internal exchange between the two agents to provide context before the call is handed over.
An example of a cold transfer is: A customer calls you asking about a billing issue. Your receptionist immediately transfers the call directly to the billing department without speaking to the billing agent first. The customer goes straight from the receptionist to the billing with no delay or explanation.
Cold transfer is also known as “blind transfer,” “unattended transfer,” or “direct transfer.” Some phone systems call it “unsupervised transfer” because the original agent doesn’t supervise or announce the transfer to the receiving party.
